Mary Lou Retton was born January 24th, 1968 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Retton participated in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. It was there that her life changed forever as she became the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal. Retton's gold medal worthy performance brought her a great deal of fame and earned her the nickname "America's Sweetheart."
